ISIS
- Mission Statement

The
Institute for Simulation and Interprofessional Studies has,
as its primary goal, to provide leadership in the use of
simulation technologies to improve the quality of health
care education and improve patient safety and outcomes.
ISIS will seek highly collaborative alliances in selected
projects with other educational and health care delivery
systems with similar interests in simulation. The primary
impact of ISIS will be upon the citizens of the State of
Washington and the greater WWAMI region. Through its research
and education efforts and publication of results, ISIS
will also have a strong influence and potential impact
upon providers and patients in a global fashion.

The
Institute for Simulation and Interprofessional Simulation at the University of Washington is changing
the way that health care professionals are taught.
Instead of the century-old method of “see one, do one,
teach one,” ISIS uses simulation, where performance
can be measured, validated, and perfected in a
controlled and safe environment.
ISIS is another step in a technology-driven shift
to make medical procedures safer and with better
outcomes for patients by increasing safety and
minimizing error.

ISIS
increases efficiency
Simulations provide medical students
and physicians with opportunities to practice specifi c
skills or procedures at any time. Exercises can be conducted
repeatedly, creating a high level of precision – shortening
the time required to complete a procedure and improving
patient safety.

ISIS
builds proficiency
Simulations can
be used to attain profi ciency for procedures that are
encountered infrequently enough that developing expertise
is diffi cult, but frequently enough to present a serious
challenge to the practitioner and a high risk event in
the life of a patient.

ISIS
improves outcomes
Because the curricula are designed to
capture data on performance and to immediately provide
feedback, ISIS allows students and physicians to train
in a safe environment and reduce or eliminate errors.

ISIS
improves the quality of education
This highly realistic
training produces well prepared graduates. The quality
of the training is ensured through the use of a controlled
environment with validated curricula developed by our multidisciplinary
faculty experts.

ISIS
enhances combined team communications
By providing detailed debriefings of filmed scenario
performance, members of different medical disciplines learn
the importance of proper communication skills to enhance
patient safety.

ISIS creates new technologies and conducts
valuable research.
By aligning 15 medical disciplines with
the talents of other schools within the University of Washington,
ISIS is a leader in simulation. ISIS serves as the simulation
hub of Pacifi c Northwest. As the only medical school in
Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI)
region, ISIS provides medical training to a diverse and
remote population. Its alliances with the University of
British Columbia and the Oregon Health & Science University
create a signifi cant simulation network.
