ISIS
Featured on Microsoft Technology Webcast 5/25/2006
ISIS was featured on the Microsoft technology spotlight web
cast “10”. The website, www.On10.net showcased
the technology being utilized at ISIS and talked with Dr.
Ross at length about how the technology is being used to train
future physicians and how it is saving lives. There was so
much to show that two shows were shown on consecutive days.
The first day spotlighted the Sim Man human patient simulator
and its capabilities. Tina and Laura (The Hosts) took part
in a mock code in which Chris went under general anesthesia
and had an adverse reaction. The second day highlighted the
surgical aspects of ISIS. The LapSIM, SurgiSIM and Verefi
Head 2 Head laparoscopic simulator as well as the mirror trainers,
simulated tissues and Homer Simpson Operation game.

Puget
Sound Business Journal Article 5/12/2006
Dr. Mika Sinanan, one of our experts and the Head
of ISIS R&D, recently had an article titled, “Simulation
becoming a better way to train doctors” published
in the Puget Sound Business Journal. In the article, Dr. Sinanan
discusses how simulation is becoming a necessary part of physician
training and continuing education.

Health
Sciences Open House 4/28/2006
ISIS
took place in the Health Sciences Open House. The two day
event showcased different projects and departments within
the Health Sciences and gave the public an opportunity to
see all that goes on in the Health Sciences. We had a table
located in the A300 lobby that directed the public to the
ISIS center and over the course of two days had over 1000
people come through the center. For the better part of two
days the laparoscopic trainers were thoroughly used, Dr. Ross
did mock code classes and the center was buzzing. Overall
it was an incredibly successful event.

The
Red Dragon
The
Red Dragon a reseach laparoscopic simulator developed at the
Biorobotics
lab is now located in RR-406. The Red Dragon is the second
generation of the Blue Dragon . The Red Dragon monitors laparoscopic
instrument movement along with the forces and toques applied
on the tools. Students training in laparoscopic surgery at
ISIS will be using the Red Dragon to both monitor progress
and help validate laparoscopic simulation. If you are interested
in finding out more about the Red Dragon and/or related projects,
stop by the center or email our R&D director, Mika
Sinanan.

The
robots are taking over — in the operating room.
UW researchers are looking at robotic technologies as an expansion
of arthroscopic and laparoscopic surgery, which now give surgeons
the ability to perform operations while minimizing the trauma
caused by incisions. Read article in The

Robotic
arms could be future of surgery 8/18/2005
What if, when soldiers fall on the battlefields of the future,
they are not treated and taken to safety by medics, but by
robots? UW electrical engineering professor Blake Hannaford
and a multidisciplinary research team are trying to make this
vision a reality... Read article in The
