With patient safety and improved outcomes as its focus, the Institute for Simulation and Interprofessional Studies was established by UW Medicine to take advantage of revolutionary changes in simulation technology. The Institute, one of the first simulation centers in the US to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons, is dedicated to helping medical professionals learn the technical skills they need through the use of realistic surgery simulations, virtual environments, and computer-aided instruction. Just as pilots have long been able to perfect their skills using flight simulators, now through the Institute, medical students, residents, and other health-care students and professionals can learn procedures and refine their skills using medical simulation. A gift to this fund will help the Institute sustain its position as a leader and innovator in this growing field.
