November 17-18th, 2014 the Institute, supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) hosted an internal Team Strategies & Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) Master Training Course for UW faculty and staff at the Husky Union Building. Participants came from different parts of the UW Medicine system, including Harborview Medical Center (HMC), Northwest Hospital and Medical Center (NWH), Valley Medical Center (VMC), and UW Medical Center (UWMC). Many unit specific teams were present such as HMC Pediatrics, HMC Psychiatric Emergency Services, NWH Ballard Clinic, NWH Childbirth Center, UW Regional Heart Center, UWMC Obstetrics, VMC Emergency Department, and the WWAMI Billings, Montana Clinic. While the Institute hosts several national training events as part of the national TeamSTEPPS program, this was the first event held exclusively for participants from the UW Medicine enterprise in recent years.
The UW TeamSTEPPS program focuses on providing an evidence based approach to interprofessional team training in healthcare. Participants attend modules focusing on communication, team structure, leadership, situation monitoring, measurement, mutual support, providing them with the critical tools to plan for change management and implementation. Modules include didactic presentations, as well as interactive team building and training exercises. The entire two-day session culminates in an interactive exercise allowing the participants to teach back key tools they have learned throughout the course. Instructors included faculty and staff from the Institute, UW Medicine Organization Development & Training, and UW clinicians.
Dr. Brian Ross, the Institute Executive Director, leads the "Team Tower", one of many interactive exercises exhibited during the TeamSTEPPS Training
